1. I had to live in South Africa, Zambia, and Rhodesia (as it was when I was there) while I was an eight to ten year old. I was almost abducted from a market in Ndola but my brother and his friend accepted the lift. If it wasn’t for the car having to stop at the only set of traffic lights in the town and them running from the car at that moment who knows what could’ve happened. If my memory serves me correctly one of the perps was Indian looking and his side kick was a black man.
   How did it happen?
   The three of us had just arrived with our parents and they let us go to the nearby markets unaccompanied.
   (madness in hindsight but that’s always the case)
   My brother was two years older than me and so was his newfound friend. As we were walking around we all saw what looked like a purse on the ground so my brother or his friend picked it up (I can’t remember which except that I made a big noise about it). Within seconds we were confronted by the two smiling dudes and a story of how they knew the person who’s purse it was and that if we’d come with them they’d take us to her for a reward.
   It’s all about the money Ryan.
   I made the mistake of trying to seek what I thought was the knowledge I missed because of all the constant moving around as a kid missing years of schooling. I didn’t concern myself with earning and saving toward a house. I left that too late and now it’s impossible for me to catch up (I’m sixty three).
   The idea was that you could always rent for a reasonable cost but that has all changed in the last thirty years.
   I was a fool and now I’m just another victim. I wish I could shout “racism!” but I can’t. I’m white from working class parents who hated each other (but that’s another story) Brother’s dead from drink and drugs at the age of thirty five. I destroyed myself but kept on living.
   All the psychoanalyzing about our racism is to distract from what is really the main game. If the Palestinians were on land that had no resources that could be exploited they wouldn’t be subjected to this level of persecution/genocide.
   Settler colonialism is a reality but you can bet your bottom dollar that we’re not the only ethnicity that practices it. We’re just the ones seen to be doing it atm.
   The old saying, “The more bread you have, the less sh!t you have to eat.” sums up our existence perfectly.
   Marx and Engels wanted to redistribute wealth for very good reasons but we’ll be having none of that, thank you! Those who know, know very well what would happen if they had to battle it out in this capitalistic system with the rest of us.
   It requires there be two tiers.
   Capitalism with its scarce resources for the working class and;
   Socialism built on our output for them to share amongst themselves.
   If you’re good you may get a crumb or two knocked off their table to catch if you’ve positioned yourself through hard labor, skill, dedication, and adulation, for those in charge.
   I’ve talked to both white South Africans and black Zimbabweans and tried to get their stories as to why and how they got to Australia. The white ones had complicated stories of saving enough money and some had to live in New Zealand for ten years or more before they could get into Australia. The black ones came straight here, with trade qualifications, and wouldn’t tell me if they had “assisted” passage or not. I suspect they did. Both work along side of each other and just seem to be glad to be away from where they came from. Though I did detect some nostalgia from the whites. (To the good ol’ days, I guess).
   The black ones I talked to were very cagey and had a disdain for my questions.
   I wont go where you go, Ryan. My thoughts are not acceptable to most and I’ve probably given you (and any other people who might read this) too many of them already.
   Some of the stories I heard from the whites about the robberies and hijackings would make your teeth ache.
   Anyway, just had to have a say because I actually lived there, both in apartheid regimes and black ruled.
   Ndola is a town in Zambia about twenty miles from the Congo boarder.

2. I figured my post might stay in a vacuum because this whole subject is fraught with emotion. For this reason I will add a little more nuance to my thinking on racism.
   I personally think racism is born out of bigotry and that is the cause of so much of our learned hatreds toward others.
   Bigotry is, according to Google’s “Oxford Languages”,
   “a person who is obstinately or unreasonably attached to a belief, opinion, or faction, especially one who is prejudiced against or antagonistic towards a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular group.”
   This is what I believe gives rise to racism.
   Most people are bigots of one sort or another. (Seven deadly sins, anyone?) They are upset by the permissiveness of something. Anything from personality, to sexuality, to financial status, skill, to what sort of job a person holds, to culture, to skin color. The list is endless.
   Obviously there are certain rules that are agreed upon by the majority to limit the permissiveness to whatever in society but societies differ around the world.
   I hope you can see that this is a very deep rabbit hole to go down.
   Conflict seems inevitable because it.
   The real danger is when a particular sort of bigotry is institutionalized into the laws of a country. When that happens those bigots and their views are normalized and even celebrated by the State and most (not all) of its citizens.
   Outrage, real or confected, can just add fuel to an ever burning fire in our baser instincts.
   I see it happening everywhere.
