In what has been almost completely ignored in Western corporate media, and by the US government, following a confrontation in Tel Aviv between Eritrean immigrant protesters and the police, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has openly called for the expulsion of African refugees. Despite a long history of racist abuse against black people and refugees in general, the Western governments that routinely present themselves as guardian’s of minority groups have remained tellingly silent.
On September 2, Eritrean refugees from opposing political camps began to protest in the streets of Tel Aviv. The demonstration quickly turned violent as the police became involved between the two sides. Both the Israeli police and the protesters clashed, which resulted in the injury of over 100 people, including over a dozen Israeli police officers, with videos appearing that featured seemingly lifeless bodies of protesters laying on the tarmac. Days later, the issue had whipped up a xenophobic tirade in the Israeli right-wing government, prompting Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, to announce plans to deport all African refugees, starting with 1,000 Eritreans involved in the riot.
Israel decided to begin rounding up Eritreans who were present in the protests, which had turned into a riot, and is now holding roughly 50 people in administrative detention — held without a charge, a form of detention which can be indefinite and often used against Palestinians. This prompted coverage from Israel’s most trusted news outlet, Haaretz, where a piece was published, explaining that the government is orchestrating the detention of these Eritrean’s without any evidence against them and arguing that the motivation behind their detention is racism, as all those directly involved in violent acts can be easily prosecuted.
There are currently some 25,000 African refugees who are residing inside Israeli-held territory, most of which fled Sudan and Eritrea; both are locations where there are ongoing conflicts. Despite this, Israel withholds refugee status from the vast majority of these African refugees, claiming instead that they are economic migrants; for which the government has claimed there are grounds for deportation, something which has been slapped down in the courts as a violation of international law.
Commenting on the issue of the asylum seeker riot, the Israeli Justice Minister, Yariv Levin, weighed in by asserting that this was why the planned legal system overhaul must happen. Essentially he was alluding to the fact that the Israeli government would be able to purge the African refugee population in the event the supreme courts power was stripped away. Levin said in a statement:
“We are fighting for the country to be Jewish and democratic, for the right of the residents of south Tel Aviv and Eilat to live safe lives, so that south Tel Aviv will not turn into the Wild West.”
Back in 2018, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu had described African refugees as a “flood” and labelled them as a worse threat to Israel than Daesh terrorists in the Sinai desert. This has also been a consistent theme in Israeli politics, of demonizing African refugees for political gains. Interestingly, however, polls conducted by the Israeli media in 2018 had indicated that the majority of Israeli citizens that lived in close proximity to the refugees in Tel Aviv were opposed to deportation, whereas elsewhere they were overwhelmingly in favor. However, in Tel Aviv, back in 2018, Israelis felt comfortable enough to approach African men washing themselves near the beach and to manhandle on camera as a joke. Images that were captured by an American photographer, featured an Israeli man holding an African man by his hair and taking selfies, as if he was holding up the black man as a trophy.
A myriad of racist comments against black people have frequently been espoused at the State level, or from prominent Israeli figures, with no reprimand. For instance, in 2018, the top — State financed — Sephardic Rabbi of Israel, Yitzhak Yosef, called black people “monkeys” and used the Hebrew equivalent to the N word in the same speech.
In Israel’s past government of 2021, then interior minister Ayelet Shaked presented a plan of her own to deport as many African refugees as possible, stating on her first day on the job that she would “work to return infiltrators [African refugees] to their country and encourage voluntary departure”, in order to ensure “the future of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state for generations to come.”
Israel already went ahead with the mass deportation of tens of thousands of African migrants, a policy which was most severely enforced back in 2018. This came as white migrants, who often aren’t actually refugees and are real economic migrants, receive status to remain frequently, this is the case as Jewish economic migrants are granted instant citizenship if they can prove a single Jewish grandparent. However, even when it comes to taking in Jewish immigrants, the self-proclaimed Jewish-State also has a tier system for that too, as Ethiopian Jews are three times more likely to be arrested than their white Jewish counterparts and are routinely harassed by law enforcement.
In 2019, following the gunning down of an 18-year-old Ethiopian Jew in a park near Haifa, by an Israeli police officer, sparked mass street protests that were violently suppressed. This happened only months after a 24-year-old Ethiopian-Jewish man with special needs was also murdered by police, in Tel Aviv. The Israeli authorities claimed that the man was holding a knife, while his family had stressed that that he was mentally ill and posed no immediate threat. Without going through all of the cases of abuse, the disparity in jobs, housing, and income within the Ethiopian Jewish community and beyond, it suffices to say that many are made to feel as if they are second class citizens due to the color of their skin. There are even cases of Ethiopian women having complained of being administered long-term contraceptives without their consent, which Israel refused to admit until 2013.
For a Western world that loves to hold up the banner of Black Lives Matter, that calls itself anti-racist and progressive, especially when it comes to the US Biden administration, it is rather interesting that its closest Middle East ally is able to operate as it does towards black people. Not only does Israel operate an Apartheid system against Palestinians, but its leaders openly espouse racist hate against African refugees, and institutional racism is mounted against Black Jews as well. There is a clear ethnic hierarchy in Israel, yet there is not a single word uttered about this by the so-called “woke” Western governments, and even if they express their occasional dismay at the racist comments and practices of the Zionist regime, they follow it up with another “aid package” or business deal. What is perhaps most appalling, however, is how the Western corporate media actively ignores Israeli anti-black racism, when they constantly claim to be against such behavior and policies.

Some countries want to control their borders and who comes into them. Obviously, the US and UK don’t, but Israel apparently does. It has a right to decide who comes and goes, however, nobody wants to see anyone, irrespective of race or religion treated poorly. The Western media has probably been quiet because we have enough complaints (most unwarranted) about racism and haven’t heard of what is reported to be happening in Israel; I hadn’t until I read this.
