I don’t sleep well at night anymore even though I live in a country that’s (relatively) peaceful and far removed from the middle east. I couldn’t make an exhaustive list of all the various conflicts off the top of my head (from micro to macro) that occupy my mind as I try to nod off at night but they are many. I am powerless in a very real sense but I don’t just fold into virtue signalling on some pet issue as so many in my country do. There are those who think that dropping money into a bottomless pit of misery will somehow ease their own conscience as to why they don’t speak up when they should.
Governments are very adept at throwing money at a symptom which builds an industry around that misery so that those who are employed in it do all they can to make sure that misery never ends. I see that writ large with the welfare and medical industries. This type of government policy co-opts those who start out with good intentions and turns them into walking contradictions as the real-politic of how governments entrench themselves into the lives of the ordinary citizen and make them government agents ready to defend against all those who try to reject the status quo. Criticism is met with a stock response (you know the one I’m talking about) and if you try to argue past that you are met with glazed eyes and a closed mind. If you are in one of those organizations that are part of the misery industry and make this type of criticism you soon become a target marked for special treatment that will soon have you expelled from that organization. By hook or by crook it will be done.
This is my observation of how humans live and think when they try to pretend they give a f…. about the state of the world. I guess I could call it the coping with misery industry.
