The Fawkes’s Gaze: Facebook Blocks Anonymous’ “REPORT ISIS” Page Hours before Paris Attacks

Recent news from Anonymous leaves analyzer with quite a bit to mull over with November 5th bringing about another successful global turnout at the Million Mask March, another massive hack of the Ku Klux Klan, and Facebook mysteriously blocking the Anonymous page “Report ISIS” on the social media site just hours before the attacks in Paris on Friday the 13th. Along with topics protested, these events interestingly help further depict the dualism of the hacktivist group: meaning the layers of hacking and the activism. A large portion of Anons seem to be one or the other, developing a symbiosis within the group that seems to be divisible by those capable of organizing protests, and those capable of leaking things to protest about. November 5th, 2015 brought about a coalescence of both aspects, with a foundational turnout for the million mask march in all major cities across the globe, and the tidal wave of personal information released about KKK members.

The Free Thought Project covered the turnout in Washington DC with some recorded footage and article coverage of the 8-or-so hour march of a few hundred Anons—many with megaphones and most with masks. From hoisting their flag on Monsanto’s flagpole to goading President Obama with chants at the fence of the White House, Anonymous made their presence quite known in the streets despite the Mainstream Media blackout of the march. Among central topics protested with the march were whistleblowing and the Espionage Act, the Surveillance State, the right to Freedom of Speech/Press (especially with the internet), genetically modified organisms, the usual discussion of police violence, and the discussion of quintessential Anon icons such as Barrett Brown, Jeremy Hammond, Chelsea Manning, and Julian Assange among others. Perhaps surprising, it is pleasing to report that there were no arrests in DC, despite stopping by the White House, IRS Headquarters, Washington Monument, J. Edgar Hoover FBI Building, Department of Health Services, the Department of Justice, and the Capitol Building. There were quite a few catty confrontations recorded between protesters and security guards—and the presence of such persistent and heavy security perhaps alludes to the Obama Administrations’ more authentic view of Anonymous. Whatever the President truly thinks, he clearly doesn’t seem to take the presence lightly, as snipers were found posted on the roof of the White House, and armed police with dogs and SWAT members were found at the front gates—with barricades.

In addition, as previously mentioned, the 5th brought Anonymous members to take further action on their withstanding campaign against the Ku Klux Klan, simply titled #OpKKK with the moniker #HoodsOff. Anonymous hackers reportedly involved in the release were @encrypted_six,@Anonyopnews, @AnonInside, and @OperationKKK, @Anon6k, and the release is comprehensive to say the least, releasing extensive personal information of numerous official members, including IP addresses, street addresses, and social media footprints.

Friday the 13th, harbinger of the attacks in Paris leaving over one hundred dead, now being claimed by ISIS, is also bringing Anons to discuss censorship of the hacker group’s campaign #OpISIS on Facebook on this very same Friday just hours before the attack. #OpISIS’ Facebook presence is operated by a division of official Anonymous-affiliated hackers titled “Red Cult,” who have initiated their campaign under the directive of minimizing ISIS social media presence to the point of elimination. Since 2014, the group has not only been successful with exposing lists of thousands of social media footprints of ISIS operatives, but have also helped raise a great deal of awareness on the subject in general, which makes the questions raised here all the more peculiar. Reported by Counter Current News, a news source that has held journalistic contact with Red Cult since the initiating of #OpISIS, an official statement by Anonymous can be seen here on YouTube. With Facebook’s refusal thus far to comment on the blocking, it’s mere speculation as to what the motives behind these actions are. Yet with the significance of Red Cult’s Facebook presence with their “Report ISIS” community page, the peculiar and even ominous timing of the ISIS-related events seems plausibly connected. Perhaps the most pertinent question that should be asked, however, is why exactly Facebook would feel it necessary to take action against political activism against terrorism on their website.

It’s simply a matter of record at this point that Facebook is in the back pocket of both the CIA and the NSA, so this isn’t exactly surprising, however disheartening it’s proving to be. Furthermore, the amount of manpower, hardware and taxpayer money that went into “guarding the nation’s capital” against peaceful, unarmed Anonymous protesters on November 5th seems to illustrate Washington’s growing concern with the inertia that the hacktivism group is gaining. The American Surveillance State wasn’t able to kill off Aaron Swartz in time to save their SOPA, and now American and global hacktivism has reached its Tipping Point in momentum. It seems the genie is out of the bottle and the Obama Administration may be beginning to rue the day it ever attempted to placate the masses with internet technology. For the first time in American history, Big Brother’s White House has a pair of eyes watching it as well—a moustache and rosy cheekbones resting below the gaze.
