On East Palestine… here’s live coverage (local WKBN 27 Ohio) from that day and hour of the uncontrolled burn. Notice here, they call it a “controlled release”. At 10:46, Ohio Senator Mike Rulli has some very interesting things to say. He says the decision was made by both Ohio and Pennsylvania Governors and they brought in ” a family from Louisiana, who’s only job it is, is to clean up these messes” (paraphrasing). No names were given, but they would be great to interview/ investigate.
Sen. Tulli says the decision was made because they were afraid that temperatures were going to increase over time and exceed 180*… (instead of decrease, which is what you would expect, especially when fire crews had already put the fires out).

The Omega Man (a remake of The Last Man on Earth) also portrays society as bifurcated between the science-driven-woke-protagonist (Charleton Heston) and the anti-science-conspiracy theorist-satanists (it was the 70’s). The Last Man on Earth also has a scene framing “conspiracy theorists” as a thing to avoid. Most, if not all, pandemic movies work in that topic… people either warning against or questioning the official response.
HG Wells didn’t have to go that far into the future to comprehend a bifurcation.
