I detect a lot of anger in this report, and rightly so, yet it doesn’t matter now. With the development of the science of nanotechnology, which began 30 years ago, the amount of nanoparticulates in the environment is difficult to comprehend and impossible to determine. They are composed of naturally occurring elements and synthetic materials that are not natural. They are either non-replicating or self-replicating. They are invisible and they are everywhere. They penetrate living cells and cause all kinds of debilitating effects and genetic damage. They are absorbed, inhaled, or ingested. There is no way to get rid of them because they bioaccumulate! They don’t magically disappear!

I live in Manhattan near Washington Square. NYC allegedly has forty species of mosquitos, some of them not indigenous. I get bitten by mosquitos in every month of the year EXCEPT February and March. I get bitten by mosquitos somewhat less frequently in November, December, and April than I do from May through October. Mosquitos reach maximum population density in September and October when they bite all day long. Mercifully, in June, July, and August mosquitos here take the afternoon off and usually bite at night, early in the morning, and toward sundown. Because of proximity to so much water, temperatures stay warm here in the fall in contrast to colder weather in interior locations where it freezes far earlier. It may not freeze here until around the winter solstice! Nonetheless, I concur that the very few verifiable cases of West Nile do not justify application of pesticides. In any case, spraying from the street makes little sense because most open vessels collecting water exist in back yards, NOT on the street or in front yards. When Giuliani sprayed for West Nile, mourning doves in my neighborhood grew tumors on their faces and died because they could not feed and drink. Thanks for your interest in this topic. Bill Moye
