Palestinian Factions Revolt Against PA Which “Cancels” Security Coordination With Israel

Palestinian Authority (PA) President, Mahmoud Abbas, announced the cancellation of the Oslo Accords and the end of security coordination between the PA and Israel again this week, following the assassination of three Palestinians in Nablus. This is not enough to blind the Palestinian people to the true nature of PA rule.

On February 9, a rare joint statement was issued, by the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad Parties, in which they condemned the outcomes of the recent Palestinian Central Committee (PCC) meeting. The meeting was boycotted by PIJ, Hamas, the PFLP and DFLP among other Palestinian political parties due to it taking place without setting forth a unity roadmap and reforms prior to its announcement. The PCC is a 142-member bloc and is a key decision making body within the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO), from which the PA was created to maintain partial control in the occupied territories.

The joint statement condemned the PCC meeting, which had been a vehicle for PA President Abbas to select his loyalists into the position to succeed him and along with others inside the Palestinian Authority. “[The selections] do not represent our people, and constitute a breach of the national consensus and a suppression of the will of the Palestinian people”, the statement read. It further went on to reject the Oslo Accords and state that there should be no return to it allowed, adding that it should be defeated and dropped along with security cooperation with Israel. The Oslo Accords of 1993-5 were supposed to be the beginning of a process towards a two-State solution and birthed the current PA ruling body we see today in the West Bank. Security cooperation is the active collaboration between elements of the Palestinian Authority’s security services and Israel’s military occupation forces and intelligence.

The gruesome assassination of three Palestinians driving in a car, on Tuesday, in Nablus, was a trigger for popular outrage across the West Bank and caused several retaliatory attacks on Israeli occupation forces, as well as non-violent demonstrations. What became clear shortly after the Israeli special forces [Yamam] carried out the attack, firing 80 bullets into the car of the Palestinians who belonged to the al-Aqsa Martyrs brigades (unofficial Fatah party armed wing), was that the PA had provided intelligence to Israel which may have helped in the assassination. In fact, the armed cell itself had been cracked down on by the PA before, one of the men killed was even arrested and tortured by the PA and remaining members of the cell blamed security cooperation for the Israeli attack.

Even at the funeral of the three Palestinians killed, on Tuesday night Palestinian Authority police opened fire in the air and ripped a Hamas flag out of the hands of one man attending the procession. This gave a bad impression to the Palestinian public, outraged at the assassination.

In order to try and cover up for the further deterioration of public trust in the Palestinian Authority, the PA declared an end to Oslo and security coordination and condemned the Israeli assassination. Yet, despite its attempt to convince Palestinians of its sincerity, in its rhetorical opposition to Israel’s actions, critics began pointing to the very same statement made in 2018. Back in 2018 the PA also penned that Oslo was dead and security coordination was to be a thing of the past, but this never happened and was completely ignored inside the PA. Even with Donald Trump’s so-called ‘Deal of the Century‘, the Palestinian Authority still continued to collaborate with the Israeli occupation on a daily basis after doubling down on its anti-security coordination rhetoric. It has become somewhat of a joke now to Palestinians that the PA is going to drop this coordination, because it is well known that without it the PA is 50% useless to Israel and the only other possible usage would be for it to continue policing Palestinian resistance itself.

Israel is in desperate need of a real plan to revive the Palestinian Authority in order to maintain the status quo and for now the corrupt bourgeoisie elite in Ramallah are still standing. Although, in the event of any uprising, the PA is bound to become a sinking ship as it heads down its very slippery slope to its own demise. The Palestinian joint statement was the first step towards an alternative to corrupt PA rule, they stated that resistance is the only way forward and called for an alternative Palestinian unified political platform through which committees to deal with confronting the settlers and soldiers will be coordinated. If the PA falls, so does the bulk of Israel’s security apparatus in the West Bank, and with the intention there by the most popular Palestinian political parties, including many members of Fatah (not including the leadership), it is clear where things are heading. A revolt is one big event away from ripping the power from under Mahmoud Abbas and his elitist bubble.
