You paint Al-Jolani as a bad guy, but realistically, what is he supposed to do? Syria is occupied; his family’s land was stolen by the Israelis. What is he supposed to do? I get vibes from him that he’s actually trying to help his people, but with a hammer over his head. Some people feel that they can best help their people by coming to power with the support of the U.S. then later after they have power, starting to act from their own will and agency. That traditionally is when the U.S. turns on them. Doubtless the same will happen to this guy. My feeling is that he believes he can improve Syrian future through making deal with the Devil. Not sure how that’s going to work out for him but to me, it looks like that’s what he’s betting on. It appears that Assad ran torture camps in Syria. Are you claiming this is a lie? That tens of thousands of Syrians did NOT disappear forever, never to be heard from again? and what about the illicit drug running? From what I’ve seen, the Syrians feel safer now than they did with Assad. Syrians have been returning to the country who were driven abroad under Assad. I’m not arguing that what you’re saying isn’t factually true, but that there is some nuance on the ground, that this isn’t black and white.
