Instead of Arresting Him, Officer Drove Man 100 Miles For His Sister’s Funeral

From street-level police interaction to the court room, it is hard to deny this nation’s clear issue with its justice system as a whole. Race aside, any country that has over 1000 people shot and killed in a given year, clearly has a problem that needs to be addressed. Now whether that issue rests with the officers themselves or society at large is actively disputed. Yet when compared to any other industrialized nation, its becomes clear that we have lost our way.

However, even in this contrived state of “divide-and-conquer” upheaval that the American people have been unwittingly manipulated into, we must never forget that police officers are human beings with families, bills, and responsibilities; many of which are just as upset about the current state of the country as the average citizen. There are no doubt officers that should never have been allowed to wear the uniform, and many more that should be held accountable for their lethal actions yet are continually let off with a slap on the wrist. Regardless, there are those within the ranks that acknowledge the problem; the ones who have spoken out to their detriment, and ones who desire change but fear for their own family’s livelihood if they were to stand up for the people against the blue brotherhood.

There are many such officers who actively try to repair the broken relationship they have with their communities by showing that they have the ability to be kind, and understanding in a situation when many others might have immediately, and reflexively resorted to violence.

Mark Ross had just found out that his sister had been killed in a car accident and needed to make his way to his mother as fast as possible. The only problem was that he had no way to get there. Mark convinced a friend he knew to drive him and they jumped in the car on that early Sunday morning in Indiana.

Mark wrote in a Facebook post that they were speeding through Ohio, bound for Detroit, when the lights flashed behind them.

“I knew I was going to jail due to a petty warrant,” Ross wrote.

To add to the issue, it was discovered that the driver had a suspended license and an outstanding warrant as well, according to Inside Edition. Trooper J. Davis ended up taking the driver into custody and having the car towed, which left Ross stranded in Ohio.

Ross explained what happened next when Ohio State Highway Patrol Sergeant David Robison arrived:

“I broke down crying and he saw the sincerity in my cry. He REACHES OVER AND BEGAN PRAYING OVER ME AND MY FAMILY. He offered to bring me 100 miles further to Detroit because they towed the vehicle. Everybody knows how much I dislike Cops but I am truly Greatful (sic) for this Guy. He gave me hope

Sergeant Robinson indeed drove Mark 100 miles all the way to a Detroit coffee shop where he could meet his cousin.

“It was just so overwhelming,” Ross told Inside Edition. “They were trying to help us.”

It is truly amazing to see such kindness in a time of such hostility. It becomes quite hard to see the good in the world when the only information the populace is exposed to each day is the overwhelming negativity that surrounds us, and not the possible solutions or highlighting those such as Sergeant Robinson who take it upon themselves to show the country the good within us all. We all need to find ways to focus on the good in the world, even us at The Last American Vagabond. It is all too easy to get lost in the fight for awareness and fail to see the good that is all around us. Much of what is important in the world is very ominous, but that does not mean that the world is without the type of kindness that Sergeant Robinson demonstrated. We could all stand to be reminded of such altruism and its prevalence in society.

Mark’s family has expressed just how grateful they are for Robinson’s kindness, and the sergeant even promised to attend the funeral. He has shown this family that the mainstream portrayal of the state of the nation is not as one-sided as they would have us believe; he has given this family something that many in this country have lost: hope.
