An aspect of the vast bulk of coverage of this conflict that I find curious is the almost total divorce of the current situation from any historical context that pre-dates the re-absorption of the Crimea by Russia in 2014.
The seeds of the current conflict were sown when the Russian Empire defeated the Ottoman Empire in 1774 and subsequently annexed the Crimean Khanate in 1784. In 1793, after the second partition of Poland carried out in concert with the Prussian Empire, more than 3/4 of the current lands of the Ukraine were legally under Russian control. In 1853, the Russian Empire went to war with the Ottoman Empire when it occupied the Danubian Principalities, leading to a coalition of the British and French Empires and the Kingdom of Sardinia (a proto-EU intervention force, if you will) declaring war in support of the Ottomans; the conflict known to us as the Crimean War and arguably the first modern war where a significant factor was the media coverage of it.
I list these events in order to illustrate my understanding of the fundamental strategic questions that are now and since Catherine the Great have been at play in this part of the world.
– Can Russia be allowed to dominate the Black Sea?
– Can Western Europe maintain a strategic wedge in the form of Romania and Hungary between Russia, Bulgaria, Russia’s Greek co-religionists and the Mediterranean Slavs, thus limiting access to the Mediterranean and the isolation of the Anatolian Peninsula?
– Can the Anglo-American Empire frustrate the formation of a strategic alliance between Russia and Germany?
This is clearly a simplification of what is at stake but I believe in broad terms, these are the things that matter to TPTB on both sides, especially when viewed in context of Russia and China’s convergent strategic interests and Russia’s current position of strength in world energy and resource markets. The human cost, as ever, is meaningful to these psychopaths only in so far as it can be exploited to their advantage.

Whether its an open declaration of intent to overthrow Assad, the murder of Khadafi, the ridiculous “recognition” of Guido, the invasions of Viet Nam, Laos, Cambodia, Afghanistan, Irag, on and on and on, or the orchestration of direct attacks against its own populations disguised as “white supremacists,” “domestic terrorists,” or whatever, none of that “exists” in this Orwellian warped reality we “live” in today. Those are only the relatively recent examples. The British Empire has practiced this for hundreds of years, and the US for more than a hundred itself.
Hey did you know that Mark Twain commented on this very topic as early as 1900? Take a look at his “Salutation Speech From the Nineteenth Century to the Twentieth,” :
“But it was impossible to save the Great Republic. She was rotten to the heart. Lust of conquest had long ago done its work; trampling upon the helpless abroad had taught her, by a natural process, to endure with apathy the like at home; multitudes who had applauded the crushing of other people’s liberties, lived to suffer for their mistake in their own persons. The government was irrevocably in the hands of the prodigiously rich and their hangers-on; the suffrage was become a mere machine, which they used as they chose. There was no principle but commercialism, no patriotism but of the pocket.”
Or look at “To the Person Sitting in Darkness,” :
“There have been lies; yes, but they were told in a good cause. We have been treacherous; but that was only in order that real good might come out of apparent evil. True, we have crushed a deceived and confiding people; we have turned against the weak and the friendless who trusted us; we have stamped out a just and intelligent and well-ordered republic; we have stabbed an ally in the back and slapped the face of a guest; we have bought a Shadow from an enemy that hadn’t it to sell; we have robbed a trusting friend of his land and his liberty; we have invited our clean young men to shoulder a discredited musket and do bandit’s work under a flag which bandits have been accustomed to fear, not to follow; we have debauched America’s honor and blackened her face before the world; but each detail was for the best…And as for a flag for the Philippine Province, it is easily managed. We can have a special one—our States do it: we can have just our usual flag, with the white stripes painted black and the stars replaced by the skull and cross-bones.”
So this is nothing new. Our grandparents and parents generations pretended it was all good, too!
Remember this Ryan, even in 1961 around the Bay of Pigs the US had satellite photos allegedly showing something. They even had great photos of men playing golf on the moon!
Today they have satellites the size if a basketball that can literally read license plates in the ground, probably deploy facial recognition, and who knows what else. So if anything other than London-Wall Street propaganda were “pouring” into any part of Ukraine, do you think we might know about it?

Just a comment on 2014 Crimea and the referendum to join Russia, possibly followed 2022 in a Donbass referendum to join Russia. It’s often argued that the referendum showed that locals voted, and therefore leaving Ukraine was legitimate. Constitutions may have articles about secession, but in practice, countries don’t like parts of a nation to leave the union (Texas leaving the US..). In Ukraine, the 2014 Crimean referendum was in violation of the constitution, which requires all of Ukraine to vote on Crimea’s exit, not just the people living in Crimea. Same applies to Donbass: the referendum would need to be voted on in all of Ukraine.

Issues of altering the territory of Ukraine are resolved exclusively by an All-Ukrainian referendum.
Great work Ryan. I am not surprised by any of this. I was expecting them to create chaos to distract from the covid-19 and AGW scams, the freedom protests, and tyranny.
It had already been established/proven via a couple different investigations, that there was/is no pandemic. Now the freedom protestors have also proven this, without planning to. Around the world people gathered, during cold/flu seasons. No increase in infection or death. Even those who struggle with critical thinking, should be able see that the pandemic is fake.
“They” needed a major distraction to fill the “news”, so many will not see this. The illegal attacks in Canada on peaceful protestors, also seems to me to be, at least in part, a means to hide the fact that this did not cause any spread of disease.
If anything the hope these protests caused, will have improved general health; AND! if there had been a new contagion, an actual pandemic, the protestors just achieved herd immunity and “it” is therefore over.
Of course “it” never existed, but this should be clear by now. IMO
