US Airdrops Weapons to Syria

The U.S. just made the decision to airdrop weapons to the Syrian rebels now given the shiny new moniker of “Syrian Democratic Forces,” despite the fact that very recent history has shown that most of the airdropped weapons end up in the hands of ISIS.

According to Al Jazeera, witnesses saw U.S. forces delivering the weapons directly to the rebels purportedly fighting ISIL and ISIS forces in Syria. Additionally, Russian diplomats have been discussing the possibility of adding armed forces to the Syrian conflict to help out the rebel fighters.

This is not surprising, considering that the U.S. has recently been outed as the biggest arms dealer in the world. However, the question is whether the U.S. was supplying these weapons because of an opposition to ISIL, simply for financial gain or to make a power play.

The weapons were airdropped to Marea, a town in Syria located in Aleppo, an area to the North.

“Coalition airplanes dropped … ammunitions, light weapons and anti-tank weapons to rebels in Marea,” explained Rami Abdel Rahman, the head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, in an interview with Al Jazeera.

This was allegedly the first airdrop of its kind by the U.S., and it has been confirmed by American defense officials. However, these officials deny that any light weapons or anti-tank weapons were included in the drop. Whether the light or anti-tank weapons where in fact delivered, the claim that this was the first airdrop of its kind is categorically untrue, and the military is very aware of that fact. It is quite surprising how blatantly misinformation gets tossed around in recent years, which then calls into question their previous claim in regards to the type of weapons delivered.

Recently, fighting in Syria has intensified, resulting in many fleeing the country, while others have remained to fight on the side of the rebel forces. Over 2,000 individuals managed to evacuate before becoming trapped by ISIL, but 8,000 ended up being stuck in the city as the attacks became more intense.

The supplies were all airdropped to the Syrian Democratic Forces, the major group that the U.S. claims has been active in combating ISIL and ISIS, yet many reports have arisen that demonstrate the SDF are in fact different factions of the same militant groups within ISIL, and are simply being labeled as “moderate” or “SDF.” The misdirection continues as it was recently revealed that U.S. troops that are claimed to be non-combatants, have also been caught fighting on the front lines in Syria. As fighting intensifies in these areas, it remains to be seen if the U.S., Russia, and other anti-ISIS regions will continue to be further involved and supply more weapons to the SDF, yet as the leading arms dealer in the world, the U.S. will not be stopping any time soon.
