“Nobody thinks the virus is going away having spread as widely as it has. It is now endemic in the population. We will probably have to deal with it as we do ever changing flu viruses.”
This is the exact reasoning I heard for why we DID NOT shutdown for the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. Because we were so globalized that it would be so far spread by the time we initated quarantines. So now we have a more globalized world and a more transmissible virus but we can lockdown now despite it being too late.
Also does any virus or bacteria that caused a pandemic ever go away? They are all still here. It is just that people don’t get sick from it or we don’t bother checking anymore. Because we can still find Smallpox and Yersinia Pestis bacteria if we so choose to in a good number of the population.
