The 2016 Republican National Convention is fast approaching, but according to a recent poll, Donald Trump doesn’t even have the support of half of his party. Yet it remains to be seen what effect this will have on his campaign before the convention in July.
According to a recent Fox News poll, over half of the Republican party wants someone else to be elected this July.
Currently, Hilary Clinton is up 38-44 percent over Trump, and her lead over him has only risen since he’s been on the campaign trail. Of those still choosing to participate in the left-right paradigm, some feel that Clinton would make better decisions for the country than Trump, yet he has the lead with African Americans, women, those who make under $50,000 a year, and voters under the age of 45. Since May, Trump has lost 8 percent support with Republicans, and has been losing ground in a lot of other areas, as well.
So, what does all this mean for his candidacy in general? Some are calling this an absolute nail in the coffin for Trump – after all, if his own party won’t support him, what chance does he have? A poll expert believes that he still has a chance to change public perception, although he is definitely in danger of not being nominated.
“The results here aren’t disastrous for Trump given the troubles he’s encountered the past few weeks,” Daron Shaw, who helps conduct the Fox News poll, stated. “He’s within striking distance. But he absolutely must combat the growing perception that he is temperamentally unsuited and intellectually unprepared to be president.”
The Republican party could still end up uniting behind Trump this month. If they don’t find someone to rally behind and allow the party to be divided, or don’t come up with a clear candidate, that surely won’t be good for the party. But the fact remains that most Republicans just still aren’t for Trump. A great deal of them feel that his rhetoric is racist and extreme, or that he’s too ignorant of public policy and world issues to be president. And even those who support some of his more extremist ideas won’t support him because he won’t speak out against abortion and gay marriage.
It is clear that Trump is facing a lot of opposition this election, and he may not be able to claim the candidacy after all.
